North End

Client's Goals:

The original floor plan of the house didn’t have a nice flow to it; the walls made it feel choppy, and it was too small for what they had planned. Since they entertain a lot, they wanted a large, separate dining room to host guests, as well as a more casual sitting area.

Originally, the bedrooms were located in the basement, but the clients wanted to move their rooms to a second-level addition to gain more space and enjoy larger windows. The basement bedrooms were then turned into offices and a spare room for company.

Points of Interest:

  • The addition at the back of the house and on the second level needed to match the existing exterior colours. We were able to work with our supplier and found great matches, even though the original colour choices had been discontinued.
  • The Murphy Door to their closet! They were so excited to have that. Since they typically use the side door as their main entrance, we didn’t want to add any clutter to that entryway. The clients also loved the idea of keeping that kind of storage hidden. On the side that guests can see, it looks like a recessed bookcase, adding visual appeal—they have photos and books on display instead of winter coats and boots.
  • The staircase to the second level was another key element. Early in the design phase, we explored how to lay it out. We could have added walls on both sides to enclose it, but instead chose an open stringer staircase on one side. This made the area feel larger, and the wrought iron spindles added a touch of elegance to the stairs themselves.
