Meadowlands
Client's Goals:
These clients came to us after an unfortunate surprise. As they began moving into their newly purchased home, they opened the door to start placing boxes inside, only to discover the house had flooded. While they had planned on renovating eventually, this event pushed the timeline forward significantly.
They wanted to redesign the entire exterior and refresh the aesthetics of the interior. The goal was to modernize the outside appearance and create a soothing, calming interior. The plan was to keep things fairly neutral but introduce depth through texture and wall trim details.
Points of Interest:
- The large windows along the back wall: The original windows were the same size but had round transoms at the top, giving the house a more traditional look. We kept the overall dimensions but squared off the tops. This detail was carried throughout the entire home, creating a more modern and cohesive look.
- The folding patio door is a true show-stopper. While we had the option to have the door fold inward, that would have impacted the kitchen’s layout, reducing valuable cabinet and counter space. Instead, we installed a door that folds outward, which gave them more functional room inside. Since the homeowners love to entertain, having a door of this size that opens fully helps extend the usable space and creates a seamless flow for guests.
- The full exterior transformation: Originally, the entire house including the siding, bricks, and windows was done in varying shades of taupe and beige. While that palette can be appealing, it wasn’t what these clients envisioned. We painted the brick and siding, upgraded to black windows, and added MAC metal siding on the second level to introduce warmth and visual contrast.
- The front door upgrade: Before stepping inside, visitors are greeted with a striking new front entry. The original double “wood” door was replaced with a sleek, modern single door with a sidelight. We kept the window above the door, but instead of one large pane of glass, we mirrored the division created by the door and sidelight. The mullion between the two upper windows follows the same vertical line for a balanced look.
- The interior ambiance: Upon entering, you’re welcomed by calming neutrals. The flooring is a light blonde tone, and the walls are painted a soft, airy colour. An open riser staircase enhances the sense of space. Wall trim details throughout the rooms add subtle texture and dimension.
- The staircase railing: The open riser staircase is paired with glass panels instead of traditional spindles and posts. This not only adds a modern touch but also allows natural light to pass through and brighten the adjacent dining room.
- Accent lighting: We introduced warm accent lighting in key areas, along the stairs, inside bathroom niches, and underneath the kitchen island. These small touches add both function and ambiance throughout the space.
