Client's Goals:

This house definitely had the potential to become an open concept living space. There wasn’t an easy flow to the original floor plan, so the clients wanted to make the main floor as open as possible. We also made some exterior updates including the front door, garage doors, and mudroom doors.

The view to their backyard was quite stunning, so we wanted to make the windows along the back wall as large as possible. That meant we had to make some design changes to the fireplace, but the client loved the end result.

Points of Interest:

  • The front door was replaced and reimagined. Originally, it was a standard height door with a transom above. We decided to extend the glass portion to match the height of the transom, which gave the entrance a much grander appearance. Because we had the wall space available, we made the door itself both taller and wider, and added two sidelights.
  • The back wall of windows in the living room makes a bold impact. They let in an abundance of natural light and highlight the beautiful backyard view. The original back wall had some windows, but they were arched, giving the home a very traditional feel. By squaring them off and relocating the fireplace to the interior wall, we were able to add more glass and provide an uninterrupted view.
  • The original layout included many interior walls separating the kitchen and mudroom from the rest of the house, which made everything feel small and choppy. We opened up the space to create a true open concept main floor. Choosing light colours for the walls and cabinetry not only gave the space an elegant look but also made it feel brighter and more expansive.
  • The kitchen counter is made from porcelain. Porcelain can be a challenging material to work with, but when done right, it significantly elevates the space. In this kitchen, it complements the chosen colour palette beautifully and adds a sophisticated touch.
  • All cabinetry throughout the home was custom designed. This includes the kitchen, pantry, mudroom, and all the bathroom vanities. Custom cabinetry allowed us to optimize the layout and functionality of each space while maintaining a consistent flow and style across the entire home.
